2/3/2 Annuities (Pensions):

Lack of technical development and
unimpressive profitability of annuity and life
business worked against the growth of life
assurance market before the mid eighteenth
century.

The scientific knowledge of mortality
statistics was necessary for the calculation of
life assurance premiums depending on premium
tables.

2/3/3 Professional policies :

The specialist life offices were not
exclusively concerned with professional clients.
A number of companies promoted schemes for
policy-holders in industrial, commercial, and
non-professional occupations.

From the mid-nineteenth century some
British life offices attempted to widen the market
for ordinary life assurance.
